This year, the Louisville Zoo’s wildest 5K in town — Throo the Zoo presented by Norton Audubon Hospital — will be run virtually only. The Zoo has cancelled this year’s in-person portion in an abundance of caution and following the recommendations of Kentucky Governor Beshear to postpone events in response to Kentucky’s red state status from increased cases of COVID-19. The onsite race had been scheduled for November 21, 2021 and was rescheduled from its usual date in May also due to COVID-19 measures.
The virtual race allows participants an opportunity to complete the 5K distance at their own pace on a date, time and course of their choosing before November 25, 2020.
Throo the Zoo is one of the Zoo’s largest fundraisers. The virtual race proceeds benefit the Louisville Zoo, which is dedicated to its mission of bettering the bond between people and our planet.
Virtual registration for this important Zoo fundraiser is $30. Participants can add a cotton sloth-themed shirt for $7 and a tech shirt for $12. Guests can see the shirt’s design and can register at louisvillezoo.org/throo.
Participants will be sent information about drive-thru packet pick up at the Zoo to receive items included with their registration including an admission ticket for a future visit to the Louisville Zoo during regular hours, commemorative medal and more.
Already registered participants who opt not to run virtually can choose one of these options:
- Donation: As the Zoo is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, registrants can convert registration to a donation and receive a tax write-off.
- Deferral: Current participants may choose to defer their registration to next year’s Throo the Zoo 5K Run/Walk.
The Zoo is asking current registrants to select the option by November 9, 2020. Beyond that date, registrations will automatically convert to a virtual registration.
Current registrants will receive an email with directions on how to choose their options.
Throo the Zoo is presented by Norton Audubon Hospital with additional support by Outfront Media, Pepsico, Swag’s Sports, T-Mobile and USA image.
The Louisville Zoo, a non-profit organization and state zoo of Kentucky, is dedicated to bettering the bond between people and our planet by providing excellent care for animals, a great experience for visitors, and leadership in scientific research and conservation education. The Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
