Cane Run students learn about orangutans

School at the Zoo: Cane Run Day One

At 10 a.m. on September 12, 2016, 4th graders from Cane Run Elementary arrived for their first day of School at the Zoo.

With name tags on and pencils in hand, students immediately began learning how animals survive in their natural habitats using specific body structures. Students interacted with a African pygmy hedgehog and a Madagascar hissing cockroach during class. A few birds of prey also visited the classroom.

Later students toured our Islands exhibit and investigated what structures penguins, porcupines and fruit bats have for survival. They took notes in their School at the Zoo science notebook.

We started our weeklong study of ants today with an outdoor field observation. Students collected data on ant activity surrounding the MetaZoo Discovery Center.
