The Louisville Zoo, in partnership with LG&E and KU Foundation, invited families and individuals to join Kids in Action, a initiative created just for students and part of the Zoo’s Earth Month Celebration.
Kids in Action encourages participants to design conservation projects for the benefit of their own community. The program helps gives students a platform to share these projects with conservation minded individuals across the region.
2026 Winners!
“BUILDING KINDESS FOR BATS”
Georgia Chaffee Tapp School Preschoolers Dominick Escobar Matthew Paz, Adam Diaz and Eyden Navas along with instructor Dawn Elliott created a bat house.
“In this hands-on project the students will decorate a bat house that will be placed outdoors to provide a safe resting place for bats. Students will learn that bats are nighttime animals that help the environment by eating insects like mosquitos. The activity encourages creativity while teaching children about helping animals and respecting nature.”
Holy Cross High School juniors Addyson Rader and Aleigha New
“We decided to make a birdhouse because we don’t see many out in public places. We first sketched our idea on paper and used measurements. With this sketch, we created a 3D model on Tinkercad to get a better idea of what our final product would be. We got the wood from a woodwork shop who planned to throw it out because it was cracked. We measured and cut the wood pieces to size and put it together. We used bright colored paint to make it look like a barn and also to attract birds. We also used glitter on the dark roof to attract them. We decided to make a birdhouse because we don’t see many out in public places, so birds don’t have cute comfy places to be in.”
“FROG HOUSE”
Holy Cross High School juniors Luke Harris, Dillon Drake and Bobby Bales created a Frog House
“We used leftover wood scraps that would have eventually made their way into the trash to make a frog house because we believe the smaller animals are sometimes overlooked.”
“THE WING STOP”
Home schooled Kindergartner Gabriel McCabe created a pollinator Garden
“We researched the best flowers for bees, created a board explaining it, and built a mini garden full of everything we learned about what bees love.”
