ABC’s of Zoo Kids

This two-fold program, now in its second decade, raises money from individuals and community partners to subsidize Zoo field trips for schools and nonprofit organizations serving at-risk or disadvantaged children.

But, what does the process involve?

After you determine your eligibility, complete an online application. It only takes about 20 minutes, if you know what dates your class/ group would like to visit.

Once you’ve completed and submitted your application, you’ll get an immediate, electronic confirmation.

Zoo Kids Qualification Requirements

Is my school/organization eligible for Zoo Kids funding?

If you answer YES to all of them, you are eligible.

  • Are you a 501 (c)(3) non-profit agency or school serving a majority percentage of underprivileged children?
  • Can you submit a completed application on or before Aug. 22, 2026?
    Please note, only ONE application per school or organization will be considered. If you have multiple grades or programs that would like to participate, please consult your staff internally before applying.
  • Do you have your principal/school board or Executive Director’s approval, prior to applying, for a field trip in 2026-20267?
  • Can you provide your own transportation for participants to/from the Louisville Zoo?
  • Can you provide the required number of chaperones for your group (1 adult per 10 children)?
  • Can you have your students/clients create thank you cards/letters/drawings to the Zoo Kids program and send them within two (2) weeks of your visit? This step is crucial for the continuation and growth of this program. Non-fulfillment may render your organization ineligible for future participation.

The application period for the 2026 – 2027 school season is open!

  • April 15: Application period opens
  • August 22: Application period closes
  • September 4: Applicants notified of grant status
  • September 19: Deadline to accept Zoo Kids funds
  • October 9: Deadline for Zoo Kids field trip reservations
  • Fall 2026/ Spring 2027: Attend your Zoo Kids field trip!
