Unicorns Are Coming to the Louisville Zoo
The Louisville Zoo is excited to share early plans for a truly extraordinary addition: unicorns, projected to arrive in 2027. After years of international collaboration with zoological, folkloric, and equine‑adjacent experts, the Zoo has been selected as one of only a few institutions worldwide to participate in the first public display of these legendary creatures.

A Habitat Designed for Wonder
The former elephant habitat will be transformed into a lush, multi‑sensory environment featuring carefully calibrated microclimates, layered botanical zones, and immersive viewing areas. The exhibit is designed to blend scientific curiosity with centuries of myth and storytelling, offering guests a thoughtful look at unicorn behavior, conservation considerations, and their long‑debated origins.
Meet the Unicorns
According to the official announcement, the Zoo expects to welcome three unicorns in 2027:
- Ursula: 2‑year‑old female
- Ursus: 5‑year‑old male
- Earl: 1,482‑year‑old male
Zoo Director Dan Maloney shared that staff enthusiasm for unicorn conservation was so overwhelming that they “100% funded the project themselves,” and have already begun lobbying for a dragon exhibit next.
