The Louisville Zoo is saddened to announce the passing of its geriatric southern white rhinoceros, 41-year-old female Sindi, on Wednesday, March 19.
In recent years, Sindi received treatment for arthritis and other age-related conditions. Earlier this week, her health significantly declined marked by a loss of appetite, increased lethargy and acute respiratory symptoms. A variety of treatments and fluid therapy were provided while Sindi was sedated. Steps were taken to ensure her comfort and the team met to assess her quality of her life — a standard practice in such cases. Ultimately, it was determined that humane euthanasia was the most compassionate choice to provide Sindi with a peaceful end.
“Sindi has been a treasured part of our Zoo family since 1985. These tough decisions are made with a deep commitment to ensuring the best quality of life for all our animals. Our priority is their well-being, comfort and dignity from the moment they arrive until they leave us,” said Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney. “We thank our community for loving Sindi as much as we did.”
“Sindi had been a major contributor in her own healthcare in recent years as her age progressed,” said the Zoo’s Associate Veterinarian Dr. Erica Lipanovich. “She actively participated in her training, allowing the veterinary team to draw blood and address issues routinely and with ease. She has been a wonderful animal to work with and will truly be missed.”
Sindi and fellow rhino Letterman were on rotational view in their shared public-facing habitat. Guests may continue to observe Letterman daily in the Africa Zone.
About Southern White Rhinos
The southern white rhinoceros is the largest land mammal after the elephant as well as the largest species of rhinoceros. Their range is southern Africa, and their typical weight is between 4,000 and 6,000 pounds. The southern white rhinoceros is listed as near threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species due to the continued poaching threat for the increasing illegal demand for horns.
