YOUR ITINERARY
Day 1: Sunday, October 12
Depart Louisville on your way to Ecuador. Upon arrival in Quito in the evening, you will be escorted to your elegant hotel which is located in the heart of historic “Quito Antigo” and surrounded by churches, museums and national monuments. An official National Treasure, Patio Andaluz holds centuries of history within its walls and is a marvelous building of colonial origin, which offers every visitor an experience not unlike turning back in time. Then spend the evening at the Hotel Patio Andaluz.
Day 2: Monday, October 13
Explore Quito, the largest colonial town of the Americas, the first UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. Enjoy the eclectic architecture ranging from the modern quarters to varied colonial facades on churches and private residences decorated and balconies built along the last five centuries. The tour includes parks like El Ejido and Alameda, the monument of Simón Bolívar, the gothic Basilica of the Heart of Jesús, Independence Square developed during the past five centuries and flanked by the Presidential and the Archbishop’s palaces dated back to XVII and XIX centuries and, the Metropolitan Cathedral with excellent samples of the Spanish renaissance.
Walk along the so-called street of the seven crosses and pass by the Jesuit convent, once headquarters of the first university in the country, El Sagrario church with a unique orthodox cross layout dated back to the 17th century and the jewel of the crown, the Jesuit temple of La Compañía de Jesús, perhaps the most important monument of the baroque art in Quito. From there continue to the plaza of San Francisco, with temple and convent known to be the largest of the once Spanish colonies on the Americas which displays a rich sample of artistic and cultural heritage. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure to explore on your own.
Day 3: Tuesday, October 14
In the morning, you’ll head to the Otavalo Market, South America’s renowned Indian fair held in ‘Poncho Plaza’. Enjoy a picturesque drive through the fertile valleys of Guayllabamba and Cayambe, known for their rich agriculture and rose farming. After a two-hour journey through the Andean countryside, you’ll arrive in Imbabura, Ecuador’s Land of Lakes. The Otavalo Craft Market, famous for its vibrant and varied offerings, operates daily with a bustling main market on Saturdays. It’s the perfect spot to immerse yourself in local culture, haggle for woven goods, and appreciate the craftsmanship of Ecuadorian artisans. Conclude your visit with a tasty lunch at a local hacienda. If time permits on your return to Quito, you might explore Cotacachi for its leather goods, admire the stunning views at Cuicocha Crater Lake, or visit Peguche for traditional looms and handcrafted wind instruments.
Day 4: Wednesday, October 15
In the morning, you’ll fly to San Cristóbal and be met by your naturalist guide for a short ride to the pier to board the M/Y Coral I or II. The Galápagos Islands offer a glimpse into a prehistoric world, with landscapes shaped by nature’s forces and wildlife unafraid of human presence. These islands, visited by Charles Darwin during his voyage on the HMS Beagle, inspired his theories on evolution. Over the next eight days, you’ll explore stunning volcanic peaks, observe captivating wildlife like the giant Galápagos tortoises, and enjoy the enchanting underwater world. The Coral II features teakwood decor, spacious cabins, and shaded sun decks. After a welcome briefing and a buffet lunch, you’ll visit the San Cristóbal Interpretation Center and hike to Cerro Tijeretas for panoramic views. Overnight aboard the M/Y Coral I or II. (B,L,D)
Day 5: Thursday, October 16
The day begins with a dinghy ride to Cerro Brujo’s white coralline beach for a wet landing. Explore a lagoon frequented by seabirds such as Black-necked Stilts and Ruddy Turnstones, and look out for endemic species like the Chatham Mockingbird and Chatham lava lizard. Yellow Warblers and Galápagos Flycatchers are also possible sightings, with a chance to spot the rare Vermillion Flycatcher. In the afternoon, disembark at Pitt Point (Punta Pitt) on the island’s eastern tip. Here, you’ll encounter a Sea Lion colony and enjoy stunning views from a challenging hike up volcanic tuff. The area is home to the rare Red-footed booby, as well as the Chatham Mockingbird, which is found only on San Cristóbal Island.
Day 6: Friday, October 17
This day is dedicated to exploring Española Island, the southernmost in the archipelago. In the morning, visit Punta Suarez, a prime wildlife spot with diverse seabirds, curious mockingbirds, Galápagos Doves, and unique reptiles like the colorful marine iguana and oversized lava lizard. The area also features a dramatic blowhole that erupts with thundering spray during heavy swells. In the afternoon, head to Gardner Bay on the eastern shore, renowned for its stunning beach and a transient colony of Galápagos Sea Lions. It’s also a key nesting site for marine turtles. Snorkel around nearby islets to see fish, turtles, and occasionally sharks. A trail leads to the Waved Albatross nesting site, where you can observe these massive birds, which make up most of the world’s population and nest here from April to December.
Day 7: Saturday, October 18
This morning, disembark at Punta Cormorant and explore the olivine-crystal beach and brackish lagoon, where you may spot Greater Flamingos and other birds. Visit a white-sand beach where sea turtles nest (December to May) and enjoy snorkeling around Champion Islet, observing marine wildlife like black-striped salema and sea lions. After lunch and a siesta, visit Post Office Bay, where a historical barrel used for mail by mariners is still in use. Explore the north shore of Floreana, spotting rays, turtles, and sea lions from your panga. Finish with a walk to the Baroness’s Tower for views of the island’s northern shore and insights into its intriguing history.
Day 8: Sunday, October 19
After a dry landing, explore the Galápagos mountains, a birdwatcher’s paradise where you might see Tree and Ground Finches, Vermillion Flycatchers, and other species. The journey through diverse ecosystems, from the coast to humid forests, often reveals Galápagos giant tortoises in the pastures. In the afternoon, head to the north coast of Santa Cruz Island and take a dinghy ride into the turquoise waters of the Itabaca Channel. Here, you can spot sharks, blue-footed boobies, and various fish.
Day 9: Monday, October 20
Spend the day on Genovesa Island, starting with a morning trek up Prince Phillip’s Steps. This trail offers views of red-footed boobies roosting in mangroves and a dramatic cliffside vista of the bay, along with sightings of red-billed tropic birds, frigatebirds, masked boobies, storm petrels, short-eared owls, and fur seals. In the afternoon, take a panga ride to Darwin Bay. Walk past tide pools with swallow-tailed and lava gulls and into a salt bush forest where great frigatebirds nest. Watch males display their red throat sacs to attract mates and enjoy swimming and snorkeling in the bay.
Day 10: Tuesday, October 21
This morning, disembark at Rábida Island, known for its red-colored beach due to high iron content. Enjoy a walk to see a colony of sea lions, marine iguanas, mockingbirds, Yellow Warblers, and Darwin’s finches. Nearby, a salt pond may host Greater Flamingos, and pelicans nest here from June to November. The beach offers excellent snorkeling opportunities for all levels, and keep an eye out for dolphins during your navigation.
After lunch, visit Bartolomé Island, a rugged, moon-like landscape off Santiago’s eastern shore. Climb a wooden staircase to the summit of an old volcano for panoramic views, including Pinnacle Rock. The clear waters below are perfect for snorkeling with schools of fish, sea turtles, and white-tipped sharks. Enjoy snorkeling and swimming with Galápagos Penguins in the cove.
Day 11: Wednesday, October 22
Your final stop is the Pit Craters, formed not by volcanic action but by the collapse of surface materials. Explore the endemic Scalesia forest and spot vermilion flycatchers, with a good chance to see giant tortoises. Return to Baltra airport for your flight to Guayaquil. Upon arrival, transfer to the luxurious Oro Verde Hotel, where you can enjoy the outdoor pool, fitness center, Jacuzzi, and sauna. Relax and dine at the hotel’s restaurants and bars. Overnight at Oro Verde Guayaquil in deluxe rooms.
Day 12: Thursday, October 23
Today your journey will come to a close as you transfer to the airport for your return flight home. Whenever you look back on this experience just know that you’re in good company – the Galápagos Islands have touched the hearts and imaginations of Lord Byron, Charles Darwin, and countless others like yourself.
Optional Post-Extension to Peru
Begin with a flight from Baltra Island to Guayaquil, where you’ll say farewell to the group and continue on to Lima. Settle into the AC Hotel Lima Miraflores, which offers stunning ocean views, modern amenities, and proximity to local attractions.
Explore Lima’s highlights, including the Cathedral, San Francisco Monastery with its catacombs, and the Larco Herrera Museum’s extensive pre-Columbian collection. Enjoy a traditional Peruvian lunch at La Huaca Pucllana, located within an archaeological site. Spend the remainder of your day exploring the Miraflores district.
Next, fly to Cusco and travel to the Sacred Valley. Visit the Inca ruins of Pisac, including its terraces and vibrant market. Stay at the Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba, a luxurious retreat surrounded by nature, with opportunities to explore a traditional farm.
Tour Ollantaytambo, an important Inca fortress, and enjoy a scenic lunch with views of the Andes. Return to your hotel for leisure time or further exploration. Then take a scenic train ride to Machu Picchu, the renowned “Lost City of the Incas.” Explore the ancient ruins and enjoy the stunning landscape from the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, which features luxurious accommodations and natural beauty.
Return to Machu Picchu for additional exploration and then take the train back to Cusco. Check into the Palacio del Inka, a historic luxury hotel with modern comforts. Enjoy a guided tour of Cusco, including its Colonial Cathedral, Qorikancha (Sun Temple), and Sacsayhuamán fortress.
Conclude your trip with a flight back to Lima. Relax at the Costa del Sol Wyndham with a day room before your evening flight home.

Things to Know
Mainland Ecuador
- Quito is located at an altitude of close to 9,000 feet and may present acclimatization problems for individuals.
- Many of the visits to volcanoes and the countryside are also at higher altitudes.
- Guayaquil is at sea level but has a high degree of humidity.
Galápagos Islands
- Participants must be able to climb in and out of vehicles and boats/pangas unassisted. Bear in mind that some landings are wet, and others are dry, so you need to be able to get in and out of the boats easily enough and proper footwear is essential.
- You should also be able to tolerate nature walks at an easy pace on uneven terrain, sometimes uphill, for three or four hours at a time. The islands are volcanic and the ground in many cases is jugged and uneven. You should have good stability as falling can cause injury.
Peru
- Your visit includes considerable walking/hiking at high altitudes (over 9,000 feet at Machu Picchu and 11,150 feet in Cusco). These walks are uphill, and on uneven ground, at various sites and ancient ruins. You must be in excellent physical health to enjoy this destination to its fullest. These conditions and altitudes may pose problems to participants with particular physical issues, and you should always consult your personal physician before embarking on such an adventure.
General
- To enjoy this program to its fullest, travelers must be in good physical condition and consult with a medical professional should there be any respiratory ailments.
- True adventure in travel can sometimes be accompanied by unexpected changes in conditions, itineraries and occasionally your accommodations. The motor yacht Coral II is Galápagos based and is a well-equipped and spacious motor yacht designed with teakwood and a modern decorum to give it an exclusive touch. Every cabin comes equipped with a full private bath and is then handsomely decorated using wooden nautical fixtures. The interior of the yacht is fully carpeted. This Galápagos yacht has been remodeled throughout and has been upgraded to luxury class. There are junior cabins, earth deck moon cabins and superior cabins available. The Coral II allows cabin space for twenty passengers.

Facilities on Board

The dining salon and the lounge are tastefully designed, and the yacht boasts three sun decks – one half-shaded.
Cabin Facilities
The motor yacht Coral II holds 11 exterior double cabins, all fully carpeted and carefully decorated in teak wood and bronze trim. All cabins are air conditioned. The yacht has a Closed TV system, background music, cabin safety boxes, cabin phones and each has a private bathroom using cold and hot water, in addition to a hair dryer and various other amenities. This yacht is ideal for families as some of the cabins interconnect. There is a smoke detection system. The beds have been upgraded and may combine to form double beds or separate to form twin beds.
