Join Our Efforts to Honor and Celebrate Fitz’s Life
The Louisville Zoo’s 3-year-old elephant calf, Fitz, passed away on June 30, 2023 after a brief battle with endotheliotropic herpesvirus, more widely known as the EEHV virus. EEHV causes a hemorrhagic disease that aggressively affects blood cells. There is currently no vaccine against the virus and survival rates are typically only 20 to 30 percent.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of elephant Fitz,” said Louisville Zoo Director, Dan Maloney. “Fitz held a special place within our entire extended Zoo family. His presence at our Zoo touched the hearts of our members, patrons and our entire community, inspiring a profound appreciation for elephants and their conservation. He will be deeply missed.”
To celebrate Fitz’s short life and honor the efforts of his care team, proceeds from the sale of these items will directly support EEHV research via several Louisville Zoo conservation partners.
