Each month, participants will receive a discussion guide (including book, film, and podcast recommendations!) and access to a 60-minute live virtual discussion with Zoo educators. We hope to include community members of all ages in our discussion of conservation topics that are affecting the way we live our lives here in Louisville and how humans live around the globe. Some topics may include guest speakers!
“Accredited Zoos and Aquariums”
What does it mean for a zoo to be accredited? In the United States, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has been the body in charge of accrediting and setting professional standards for zoos and aquariums since the practice began in the early 1970s. The AZA and its accreditation committee are made up of industry professionals who care deeply about the welfare of zoo staff and animal ambassadors and will always advocate for the best care. Being accredited by the AZA is something less than 10% of licensed zoos in the United States have achieved and means that the zoo and its staff are providing the highest level of care for the animals and have a mission that prioritizes education and conservation. Join our discussion this month to learn about past zoo practices and how we handle things today.
