Summer Camps (2023 – SOLD OUT)

Overview

Our full-day, drop-off summer camp program explores the Zoo and the amazing world of wildlife conservation! Each camp program will feature small group sizes and unique nature focused age-appropriate activities in line with your child’s natural science interests. All camp groups will have the opportunity to experience the Zoo’s attractions, including the carousel, seasonal exhibits, exclusive experiences and enjoy up-close encounters with our small animal ambassadors!

We’re making curbside pickup as well as curbside drop-off for all families a permanent addition the camp experience. Aftercare is provided during drop-off and pickup at no additional fee.

Choose the grade your child currently attends or the grade they will enter in fall 2023.

These 2-day experiences are the perfect way to introduce your little one to the wonders of the Zoo! Each week, two different 2-day experiences will be offered. Sign your little one up for one 2-day experience or if they are ready, sign them up for two sessions that will combine to expand their knowledge of the animal world! We have fit a whole week of Zoo fun into each two-day session.

Zooper Heroes
Dates: May 30  – 31
With great power comes great adaptations! Animals have a ton of different adaptations that have inspired superhero powers like super strength, super speed, wall climbing, web slinging, and so much more! Dive into this zooper world of animal superpowers as we discover what powers animals are hiding and how it helps them survive.

The (Not-So) Bad Guys
Dates: June 1 – 2
Learn about some of the “bad guys” from around our Zoo! From vampire bats to bears, we love categorizing animals as good or bad, but is it really that simple? Discover where these animals get their bad reputation from and if they are truly deserving of being called a “bad guy.”

Hurdles and Turtles
Dates: June 20 – 21
Every animal on Earth has hurdles to jump through so they can survive. Life’s struggles are rarely as simple as a race, so animals have evolved many different ways for overcoming their unique obstacles. Learn about some of these hurdles and how animals are able to overcome them!

Monkeys and Movement
Dates: June 22 – 23
Swinging monkeys, leaping frogs, soaring birds, slithering snakes, galloping horses, swimming sharks — most animals move the way they do to help them survive! Discover how animals move and how these movements are used to gather food or flee from predators. In this camp, learn to move like the animals as we scuttle, jump and glide through animal movement!

Spot the Spots
Dates: July 3 & 5
Do you know how to tell a leopard and a jaguar apart? Was that a turtle or a tortoise? This experience is all about learning how to spot animals, and how to identify which kind of animal they are! We will explore the various kinds of animals at the Zoo, as well as learn some tips and tricks on how to find them!

Don’t Touch the Tigers
Dates: July 6 – 7
As any Zoo camper knows, you shouldn’t touch a tiger! In this experience, we won’t be touching any tigers, but we will be learning about how they feel. We will learn about which animals are okay to touch and which ones you should avoid getting that close to. Animals vary greatly in how they feel, from oily fur to soft feathers to slimy skin. Your camper will explore the animal kingdom in a hands-on way (from a safe distance)!

LEGO® Mania
Dates: June 5 – 9

If your child is ravenous about LEGO® bricks, sign them up for this one-of-a-kind camp! Campers will explore the ways nature connects through food chains and ecosystems by using their awesome building skills with LEGO® bricks. Just like with these bricks, a single missing link in the food chain can drastically change the whole ecosystem!

Picky Eaters

If you think your camper is a picky eater, wait until you learn about the picky eaters in the animal kingdom! We all know that many animals like bears may eat a variety of different foods — but some of the pickiest eaters may eat only one thing and even need special preparation before they chow down! From koala bears, to anteaters, to pandas, your camper will explore just how picky the animal kingdom can be!

Nature’s Noises

Learn about the different sounds of the animal kingdom, from the loud roar of a lion to the sweet song of a bird. What do the noises mean and do animals really talk?

Hey, what’s that smell? Animals use scent for many different purposes. Some animals like skunks use smells to ward off predators while others like ants use pheromones to communicate complex messages to each other. In this camp, learn about how different animals smell, and what those smells are used for!

Just like how LEGO® bricks are nearly limitless in what we can choose to build, this camp will explore the building blocks of our planet and how different animals and plants create an interdependent system which supports life on our planet. Your camper will use their building skills to help show that even the tiniest creatures can have a huge impact.

In this camp, we will discover all about things that make parents go “yuck!” From slimy slugs to stinky skunks, the animal kingdom has lots of things that we may consider gross; but animals use these gross adaptations to help them survive! Your camper will explore what gross adaptations animals have, as well as how those seemingly gross aspects help keep them alive!

Tales and tails

Everyone loves a good story, and the best ones always includes animals! In this camp, we will explore various folk tales and the animals who inspired them or helped the fabled heroes secure their victory. Discover true legendary animal traits and what traits storytellers made up to sound cool.

This camp explores a funny side of the animal kingdom. Your camper will experience what it would be like without any thumbs, how a sloth hangs upside down, and what those hyenas are laughing for! Just because we are having a laugh doesn’t mean we aren’t learning: from creative storytelling to crafting ideas, creating jokes is no laughing matter!

Animal Architects
Dates: June 26 – 30

The animal kingdom is filled with fantastic builders. From master carpenters to intricate architects: nature has some of the most talented designers hiding in plain sight. Explore which animals build and what their bizarre structures do to help them survive!

Creatures and Creations

This camp is about artistic expression and putting our own spin on the wonderful creatures that call the Zoo home! Learn about the adaptations and skills that animals use to survive, then mix and match adaptations to create new animals or enhance those who already exist. Some combinations may be helpful, some may be silly, but they are all going to be amazing!

Keeper Camp
Dates: June 5 – 9

Get a glimpse into the daily life of a zoo keeper here at the Louisville Zoo. Campers will learn how the zoo keepers provide the best possible care for our animal ambassadors. They will end the week with a better understanding of the animal husbandry practices used by our keepers to take care of our animal ambassadors.

Rockin’ Reptiles
Dates: June 26 – 30
July 17 – 21
Re-growing body parts, running on water, and the ability to climb any surface: these aren’t qualities of the newest superhero, they’re the amazing abilities of reptiles! From lizards to turtles, explore the amazing adaptations of creatures who call the Zoo home and get some up-close encounters with the Zoo’s rockin’ reptiles.

These camps are two days of education and adventure! Two different 2-day camps will be offered each week — but you don’t need to go to both to have a full experience! Danger Camp

Need we say more? If your camper loves “dangerous”’ animals, this is the camp for them! We will safely explore the Zoo’s “dangerous” animals and learn about what makes them dangerous. From killer claws to potent poison, nature has created lots of dangerous animal adaptations, and some even advertise their dangers to others.

Zoo keeping is one of the few science-based fields where women outnumber men — and in this camp, it’s all about the girls!
