For Public Programs:
Zoo Program Tips and Policies
Who are Zoo programs for?
Zoo programs are perfect for youth who have an interest, love or passion for animals and science. We offer a variety of programs and themes for various ages ranging from 2 to 15.
Do I have to buy an adult ticket for the Little Learners Programs?
Yes, everyone attending the monthly Little Learners programs must have purchased a registration prior to attending the program. Tickets are sold for children and adults separately.
What will my child do all day at Zoo Camp?
Your child will be introduced to the world of animals and science. Zoo Camp has age-themed programs including games, up-close animal encounters, hands-on science, along with crafts and songs. PreK-K camps include learning stations and a quiet time after lunch.
How do I know my PreK child is ready for camp?
PreK Campers must be 4 years old. Summer Campers entering PreK in the fall must be 4 years old by August 1st.
It is recommended that your child has experienced a learning environment away from home. They must be able to cooperatively play and sit and listen for 10 minutes. Campers must be potty trained and able to take restroom breaks independently.
How much interaction do campers have with animals?
Each day the campers will experience a close encounter with at least one animal from our education animal collection. Other special activities might include seeing an exhibit animal up-close for feeding, enrichment or training sessions. They will not be allowed to hold any animals but will have the chance to touch some of our creatures.
What is the camp educator to camper ratio?
The ratio is one camp educator per 12 campers. (PreK ratio is one camp educator per 10 campers.) Our camp educators must have at least one year of college. Their training includes CPR and First-aid certification as well as a criminal background check. They enjoy working with children and are knowledgeable about the Zoo. Each group also has teen volunteers who help supervise the campers.
Do you provide snacks?
We do not provide a snack. For camp programs, we ask that campers bring snacks and a lunch with a drink each day. It is recommended that younger campers bring a morning and afternoon snack. During summer camp we provide water bottles and ice water is always available to the campers.
Should I pack a lunch for my camper?
Yes. Please include snacks and a drink with their lunch. During summer camp we provide water bottles and ice water is always available to the campers. Campers will not be permitted to purchase a lunch on Zoo grounds.
What should my child wear to Zoo programs?
Dress appropriately for the weather. We will go outside rain or shine, so rain gear is needed sometimes. For younger campers, please make sure their clothing is easy for them to remove while using the restroom (Zoo staff cannot assist camper in the restroom). On the first day of summer camps, your child will be given a Zoo camp T-shirt. Your child is required to wear that shirt each day. Closed-toed shoes are recommended for your child’s safety and comfort. Flip flops are strongly discouraged.
What if my child has special requirements (dietary, allergy, behavioral, physical, etc.)?
When you register for any Zoo program, you will answer questions about your child’s health and behavior. It is important to provide us with detailed information so that we are fully prepared to give your child the attention he/she will need. We want your child to have the best experience possible and can only do this if we know the unique needs of your child.
