Artificial insemination is commonly utilized in many species to various successes. Our female Amur tiger, Sasha, was given multiple hormone injections by zoo keepers at specific time frames leading up to artificial insemination. We coordinated with two different organizations to attempt artificial insemination in 2003.
The Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium Reproductive Sciences team collected semen from our male during his annual physical exam, and the Cincinnati’s Conservation Research of Endangered Wildlife group evaluated, refined the sample, and implanted the semen directly into the uterus using laparoscopy on the same day.
