The Louisville Zoo is thrilled to welcome the Binturong, also known as the “bearcat,” to our Islands exhibit. Despite its nickname, this unique animal is neither a bear nor a cat, but a member of the Viverridae family, closely related to civets. One of the Binturong’s most fascinating traits is its signature scent, which smells like buttered popcorn—a result of secreting the same compound found in popcorn (2-acetyl-1-pyrroline).
These intriguing animals are the largest species with a prehensile tail, using it to navigate their forest habitats. Though classified as carnivores, Binturongs are omnivorous and play a critical role in seed dispersal, supporting the ecosystems of the rainforests they call home. Unfortunately, they are threatened in the wild due to habitat loss.
Binturongs can weigh between 30 and 70 pounds and live up to 15 years in the wild, though they may reach their 20s under the care of zoos. Come meet this remarkable species and learn about its vital role in nature!
