Header for The Heart of the Louisville Zoo featuring a flamingo in a heart

Annual Fund

We want you to be part of our celebration for the arrival of this spirited Chilean flamingo chick!

Building upon what they learned during the successful hatching and rearing of flamingo youngster Felix last season, our animal care team at the Louisville Zoo took a methodical approach again this breeding season. To support the conservation of this threatened species, they moved the flamingos indoors where they could stimulate the most effective light cycle and monitor pairings to ensure genetic variety.  So far this season, only one viable egg has resulted from this effort.  The team incubated the egg at a precise 99 degrees Fahrenheit, monitored the humidity in the incubator, and ensured the egg was turned regularly.

Thirty days later, our newest flamingo chick arrived! So much work and anticipation occur behind the scenes when preparing for the arrival of each new, fluffy flamingo. This work is at the heart of the care and conservation of every creature at your Louisville Zoo.  And every time something new hatches, we are grateful to the wider community that makes this work possible.

Thank You!
