(Louisville, Ky.) The Louisville Zoo recently received a major gift of $500,000 from the Sazerac Company and the Goldring Family Foundation for the Zoo’s current capital campaign. This is the largest amount the Goldring Family Foundation has gifted to the Louisville Zoo.

The Goldring Family Foundation was founded in 1955 on the philosophies of helping members in the community.  The Goldring Family, which owns and operates the Sazerac Company, has an office in Louisville, as well as the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, the Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown, and The Glenmore Distillery in Owensboro.  The Sazerac Company now has over 1,000 employees in Kentucky.

This gift will go toward the $10.4 million leadership capital campaign. Currently in the quie phase, the campaign will fund several major updates and new exhibits:

  • A renovation of the elephant exhibit to exceed the new Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) elephant holding standards while introducing new animal management programs and enhancing guest experiences
  • Expansion of the Zoo’s educational initiatives with the creation of a Safari Classroom Camp which will allow the Zoo to increase its educational offerings and award-winning programs
  • Creation of Outpost on the Edge which includes a new creative play area plus an outdoor patio and deck that will provide unique eye-level views of a new Colobus Monkey exhibit
  • Introduction of Penguin Cove, an exhibit that will place guests among penguins as they parade through the Zoo’s Islands plaza
Construction of a snow leopard exhibit that displays the graceful agility of these powerful, endangered cats

“On behalf of the Goldring Family and the more than 1,000 Sazerac employees we have working in Kentucky, we are delighted to give this gift to the Louisville Zoo so they may continue to educate and enrich visitors from all across the world,” said Mark Brown, Sazerac president and chief executive officer.

“We are very fortunate to have received this gift from the Goldring Family Foundation” said Louisville Zoo Director John Walczak. “Their generous support will help us continue to engage and amaze families and to further our mission of conservation education.”
