bongo was born at the Louisville Zoo Friday afternoon,
August 14. Weighing in at close to 50 pounds, she and mother Kaya are doing well.

has successful hatching of two endangered Meller’s ducklings
Louisville Zoo recently
hatched two Meller’s ducklings, one of the world’s rarest
and least know species of wildfowl. They are the first
Meller’s ducks ever born at the Zoo. There are only about
2,000 Meller’s ducks left in the wild (in Madagascar) and
150 in zoos worldwide.

Louisville Zoo seeks
volunteer teachers
The Louisville Zoo is currently seeking docents, volunteer teachers who work with the Louisville Zoo Education Department, to provide knowledge and information to Zoo guests. They help teach school groups, day camps, share information with Zoo visitors and even get to conduct educational outreach presentations in the community.
Louisville Zoo hatches one of
the world’s rarest ducklings
Louisville Zoo recently hatched a Madagascar teal duckling, one of the world’s rarest members of the duck family and a species seriously threatened by extinction. There are only about 2,000 Madagascar teal ducks left in the wild (in Madagascar) and 200 in zoos.The duckling, named Gerry, was born May 20 and is the first Madagascar teal ever born at the Louisville Zoo.

Holding the paint brush steady, Mikki gently touches the canvas adding her final stroke and smearing orange paint through vibrant green. Mikki has been painting more than 15 years and has painted more than 200 works of art. She is no ordinary artist, though. Mikki is a 9,000-pound female African elephant who uses her trunk like a hand to hold a paint brush to create her masterpieces.

Louisville Zoo welcomes new Membership Supervisor
Jennifer Adams
recently joined the Louisville Zoo as Membership
Supervisor. Adams comes to the Zoo with a wealth
of knowledge, including prior sales, marketing
and management experience. Most recently, Adams
served 14 years as the Director of Marketing and
Sales for Blue Apple Players, a local non-profit
traveling theater company.

Baby giraffe Bakari
(Pronounced bah-KAH-ree) is certainly living up
to the meaning of his name, “hopeful,” as he begins
to show more mobility and fullness of life. “Bakari
started out life slowly, but he is catching up,”
Louisville Zoo veterinarian Dr. Roy Burns said.
Scotty to celebrate 2nd birthday at the Louisville Zoo March 21
Baby elephant Scotty will
be celebrating his 2nd birthday on Saturday, March 21.
In the last year, Scotty has hit major milestones like
learning how to swim, teething and even being featured
in People magazine as a “superstar.”
Louisville Zoo’s 6-foot-2 baby giraffe surviving despite
difficulties
A new baby Masai giraffe at
the Louisville Zoo is improving after an uncertain
beginning. On Tuesday, February 17, 11-year-old Malaika gave
birth to her third offspring—a 150 pound, 6-foot-2-inch male
giraffe who the staff named Bakari, which means hopeful.

Louisville Zoo receives $50,000 UPS grant
to help

The
Louisville Zoo recently received a $50,000 grant from The UPS
Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS. The grant will be used to
help support School at the Zoo, a week-long “hands-on,”
“minds-on,” interdisciplinary experience designed primarily for
fourth and seventh grade students using the Zoo as a “living
classroom.”

Zoo mourns loss of female tiger Sinda
Amur tiger
Sinda, who just turned 17 on Nov. 3, died at the Louisville Zoo this
morning. Seventeen is considered to be geriatric for big cats. In
September, Sinda was diagnosed with a squamous cell carcinoma on the
roof of her mouth. This is a very aggressive oral cancer in cats.

Louisville Zoo mourns 44-year-old ailing sliverback's passing
Thursday afternoon Louisville Zoo
said goodbye to Frank, a 44-year-old geriatric silverback
western lowland gorilla. He had been suffering from chronic
arthritis and heart disease.

passes away at the Louisville Zoo
Zahara, a 3-year old Masai giraffe
at the Louisville Zoo distinguished by her crooked neck, passed
away Monday. Zahara experienced a series of difficulties since
her birth at the Toledo Zoo in August of 2005. In addition to
being rejected by her mother, she developed cervical spine
instability associated with a possible infection not long after
she was born, requiring her to wear a neck support brace.

The Louisville Zoo’s 1-year-old
baby African elephant Scotty has reached another milestone—learning how
to swim! His keepers have been introducing him to the elephant yard pool
by filling it up a little more each day, but on July 16 the pool will be
filled to the top. This is the first summer Scotty has ever gone
swimming.

polar bear, left for vacation this week. He was relocated to the
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in Ohio where he will join two other female
polar bears.

Baby siamangs celebrate 1st birthday

The Louisville Zoo’s youngest baby siamang,
Zain, will turn 1-year-old on Tuesday, May 27. He is the last to hit
this milestone. Now all three baby siamangs are 1-year-old. They will
celebrate with special goodies and presents.

Zoo’s May 31 Health &
Safety Safari
A
superhero who fights for justice with his scientific genius will visit
the Louisville Zoo on May 31 as part of Becker Law Office’s Health &
Safety Safari. Zoo visitors can meet Iron Man, the Marvel character who
is currently on the big screen in a new Paramount movie, from 10 a.m. to
2 p.m. on the Oasis field stage. (So don’t forget your camera!)
Meijer Mondays at the Zoo
Get ready to save every Monday May 5 through September 29, 2008, when
you bring a Meijer receipt to the Louisville Zoo. During Meijer Mondays,
when you purchase one adult Zoo admission you get one child’s admission
for free just by showing a Meijer receipt! One receipt can be used by up
to four adults for four free child admissions.

Throo the Zoo 5K Run/Walk, sponsored by Norton Audubon Hospital, will be

Boris, a 17-year-old Amur tiger, died at
the Louisville Zoo Sunday, March 16. Seventeen is considered to be
geriatric for big cats.

A cause of
death has finally been determined for the siamang couple—Ziggy, 15, and
Sue Ann, 9—who died April 4, 2007.
Polar bear listed as
threatened in Manitoba, Canada
Global warming and vanishing habitat are putting extreme pressure on
existing polar bear populations, according to Canadian conservation
experts. In February, the Canadian home to polar bears—the province of
Manitoba—recognized polar bears as threatened under the Manitoba
Endangered Species Act.

Amy Taylor joins the
Louisville Zoo as Group Sales Supervisor
The Louisville Zoo recently hired Amy
Taylor as its new Group Sales Supervisor. Taylor comes to the Zoo
with a wealth of experience, including sales operations for the
major league baseball team Atlanta Braves and special events
management for the National Football League’s Super Bowl XXXIV.
Taylor most recently served as the Louisville District Director for
the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Schnatter make $1 million personal gift to Louisville Zoo’s Glacier Run
project
Community leaders Annette and John
Schnatter today announced a $1 million personal commitment to the
Louisville Zoo’s Glacier Run project. This gift is in addition to the
Schnatters’ $100,000 previous campaign gift, and brings the Glacier Run
campaign total to more than $12.6 million toward its $25 million
estimated cost.

Zoo's 45-year-old female gorilla passes away
The
Louisville Zoo family is mourning the loss of Tunuka, a 45-year-old
female
gorilla.
Tunuka passed away February 2nd from peritonitis, an inflammation of the
thin membrane that lines the abdominal wall. When Gorilla Forest staff
found Tunuka this morning, they said she looked as if she was sleeping.
“She looked very peaceful,” said Gorilla Forest keeper Cynthia Cole. “It
was the way she always looked when she was asleep.”

Louisville Zoo receives $100,000 grant
The Louisville Zoo
recently received a $100,000 grant from The UPS
Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS. The grant
will be used to help support School at the Zoo, a
week-long “hands-on,” “minds-on,” interdisciplinary
experience designed primarily for middle school
students using the Zoo as a “living classroom.”

recently helped the Make-A-Wish Foundation fulfill the dream of
13-year-old Elaney Pickering of Eudora, Kan. Her wish was to meet
Scotty, the Louisville Zoo’s baby African elephant, and be a zoo keeper
for the day.

Zoo
This
rare baby weighed in at only 8 ounces at birth and is the first
offspring of his parents Ziggy and Sue Ann.
Elephant Birth
At
8:45 p.m. on Sunday, March 18th the Louisville Zoo's
African elephant, Mikki gave birth to a 285 male
calf.
Mother and son are both doing well and will remain
off exhibit for an undetermined amount of time in
order to rest and bond with one another.
